While I was student teaching, I planned and taught the geometry unit over the span of 3 weeks. I remembered geometry was very difficult for me in school and I wanted to create engaging lessons that would capture every student's interest. I started with introducing the angles, points and rays through arm movements. I would say "right angle" and the students would put their arms at 90 degree angle. If I said, "180 degrees", the students would put their arms out flat. I had arm movements for obtuse, acute, line segment, line, point and ray. I love to play "Mrs. Simon Says" and we turned it into a game. I was quickly able to assess how much of the class was understanding the concept of angles, points and rays and reteach any misconceptions. Once students had a good understanding of angles, points and rays, we moved onto measuring with protractors. I knew that students were going to need hands on experience with them. To the left is the lesson plan I created so that students could practice using protractors with their tablemates measuring angles that were taped on their whiteboards. They were fully engaged and I was quickly able to catch misconceptions because I was free to walk around and see what the students were doing. My favorite way to teach! |
