Here I created a lesson plan that I taught in Kindergarten based on the book, A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. This lesson plan included a read aloud and literacy centers. Each center had a specific task related to the book which included a retell worksheet and a writing piece. The writing piece was done in a small group setting at the teacher table. The students completed the retell on their own. There were 3 centers in all, the third center students did word work on their iPads. Rotations lasted about 15 minutes each. |
These are samples of the story retell from my lesson plan. Each child was asked to cut and paste the characters that were in A House for Hermit Crab. On this retell, there were characters that were not found in the story so the students had to differentiate between the characters and use recall to finish this paper correctly. It is important for Kindergarten students to do short retells like this to aid in comprehension and I can easily assess if they understood and remembered the story. This will also help students to read purposefully and listen attentively as stated in the TPE's as they build on their comprehension. |
From the above lesson plan, students were asked to recreate their own "House for Hermit Crab" and describe it in writing. This helps the students think critically about the literature as they create their own house. This student wrote, "Hermit crab's home is beautiful. It has lots and lots of creatures". This writing ranked a 3 out of 4 because he was able to phonetically spell, illustrate a picture related to the writing, and correctly spelled the sight words. To be a 4 out of 4 the student would have had to add more detail perhaps writing about what kind of creatures surround the home and why. This ranking helps me determine the students skill level and if they are making adequate in progress in their writing. |
